Philippines, 17 other countries start sea drills in South Korea

MANILA, Philippines — A maritime security field training exercise, which included the participation of the Philippines, kicked off on Tuesday in Busan, South Korea.

The Asean Defense Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM)- Plus Maritime Security Field Training Exercise, co-organized by Korea and Singapore, will run from April 30 to May 13.

“The Philippine Navy’s participation in this exercise manifests its commitment in promoting multilateral cooperation in a multinational environment for peace and stability among Asean and other regional navies,” said Lt. Maria Christina Roxas, public affairs officer of Naval Task Group 80.6.

The Philippine contingent is headed by Capt. Roy Vincent Trinidad while BRP Andres Bonifacio (PS-17) is skippered by Capt. Jerry Garido.

The opening ceremony in Busan was officiated by Rear Adm. Lee Seong Yeoul, commander of the South Korean Navy’s 3rd Fleet.

Aside from the Philippines, 11 other countries have sent their ships for the event: Australia, Brunei, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, US and Vietnam.

Six others have joined as observers: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, New Zealand and Russia.

A total of 19 ships, 10 aircraft and about 700 personnel from the 18 countries will be participating in a series of maritime security drills and professional exchanges. The second phase of the exercise will be held in Singapore. /muf
