MANILA, Philippines — More than 100 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Cambodia who fell victim to online scams offering jobs have been rescued since last year. The Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh has facilitated the rescue of 61 OFWs last year and 50 more so far this year. The OFWs were recruited through online scamming and “catfishing” activities in Cambodia, said the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Catfishing refers to the use of fake online persona to deceive others. The Philippine Embassy and the DFA again warned Filipinos “not to accept online job offers that promise a large paycheck with unverified companies and vague employment details.” —Dona Z. Pazzibugan
