MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos in New York are again urged to remain vigilant amid the reported rise in crimes in the city.
Citing police data, the Philippine Consulate General in New York City said that major crimes across the city, including transit and hate crimes, spiked by 37 percent.
“The Consulate General of the Republic of the Philippines in New York advises the Filipino Community to remain vigilant in view of the latest statistics released by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) indicating a 37 percent increase in major crimes citywide,” the consulate said in a statement late Wednesday.

Aside from transit and hate crimes, grand larceny grew to 49 percent this year; grand larceny auto, 46.2 percent; robbery, 39.2 percent; and burglary 32.9 percent, NYPD figures showed.
Filipinos were further called on to be “situationally aware at all times when outside their residences and to take the necessary precautions to avoid becoming a victim of crime.”
The latest victim of an attack in the city was an 18-year-old Filipino tourist from Cebu who was beaten up near the Philippine Center in Manhattan, New York City last week.
The incident was the 41st criminal act against Filipinos in New York since 2021.
