UK advises citizens not to travel to Marawi, parts of Mindanao
The United Kingdom advised on Saturday its citizens to steer clear of the western and central parts of Mindanao, particularly Marawi City, and to limit any trips to the region to essential travel.
It also mentioned lack of clarity on the implications of the declaration of martial law in Mindanao.
According to the advisory, “The Foreign and Commonwealth Office continue to advise against all travel to western and parts of central Mindanao including Marawi City; and against all but essential travel to the remainder of Mindanao.”
For citizens already in Marawi City, they were told to stay indoors, monitor the news and follow the advice of Philippine authorities in light of clashes between government forces and militants.
“On May 23, 2017, martial law for the whole of Mindanao was declared for 60 days. The implications aren’t yet clear, but government officials have said measures will include the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, the imposition of curfews and establishment of checkpoints,” it said.
