MANILA — President Duterte congratulated US president-elect Donald Trump and wished him well for his four-year term, saying he was keen on working with the new American leader to improve the relations between the Philippines and the United States.

“The United States’ presidential elections is a testament to the enduring traditions of its democratic system and the American way of life,” Mr. Duterte said in a statement issued by the Presidential Communications Office.

“The two-party system gives American voters freedom of choice based on party platforms, not just on personalities,” he said.

He said he was looking forward to “working with the incoming administration for enhanced Philippines-US relations anchored on mutual respect, mutual benefit and shared commitment to democratic ideals and the rule of law.”  SFM
