Filipino teacher in Vegas pleads guilty to lewdness with minor
LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Filipino elementary school teacher Jeremiah “Jerry” Mazo, 54, pleaded guilty late July in Clark County District Court to three counts of lewdness with a minor during the last school year.
Mazo, a music teacher, was arrested April 24, accused of inappropriately touching an 8-year-old girl several times at Don E. Hayden Elementary School, and booked on 10 counts of lewdness with a minor under 14 years old. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Mazo’s lawyer, William Terry, had told a North Las Vegas judge that his client would plead an equivalent of no contest to three counts of attempted lewdness with a minor under 14. Twenty-nine other charges would be dismissed.
Mazo faces at least five years in prison at sentencing. He could get up to 60 years. He remains jailed on $150,000 bail. He was suspended from Hayden Elementary School following his arrest. (With reports from the Associated Press).
