MANILA, Philippines?Forty-nine overseas Filipino workers who fell victim to contract substitution and poor working conditions in Poland arrived in Manila Thursday morning after being repatriated by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.

The OFWs, who arrived around 9 a.m. via KLM flight 803, had sought the help of Senator Manny Villar.

One of the workers, Rolando Corpuz, said he and 96 others were hired to work for a glass-making company in the city of Aleksandrow Lodski. He said they were flown to Poland in three batches in March.

Corpuz said their recruiter promised them salaries ranging from $500 to $700 (about P23,800 to P33,400) each. The ended up getting only P12,000 to P14,000.

"When some of us decided to stop work, we were terminated and asked to leave the company?s premises, forcing us to stay in a church without protection from the cold and relying on food donations," Corpuz said.
