MANILA, Philippines -- Airport security officials apprehended Friday morning 12 Filipino travelers supposedly bound for Canada on suspicion they are part of an illegal recruitment attempt.
Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) general manager Alfonso Cusi confirmed that the 12 were barred from entering the airport when security officials at the gate found out they did not have passports and tickets early Friday morning.
“They were victims,” Cusi said.
According to the travelers, they were from Batangas province and that a representative from the recruitment agency would meet them at the airport to give them the travel documents.
They were supposed to be on a flight to Canada, but airport officials said there was no plane bound for that country on Friday morning.
Cusi said they have the identity of the recruiter, but declined to give further details. He said the National Bureau of Investigation is still interrogating the 12.
