MANILA, Philippines -- The province of Cebu and the city government of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, have signed a Memorandum of Intent (MOI) to promote cooperation in science and technology, trade, industry, investments, education, culture, tourism, and sports, the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
The MOI was signed by Cebu Governor Gwendolyn Garcia and Ljubljana's Deputy Mayor Aleš Čerin, signing on behalf of Mayor Zoran Janković, in simple ceremonies held at the City Hall of Ljubljana on June 3.
Ljubljana is the largest city of Slovenia and has a population of 267,386. Slovenia is one of the most economically dynamic of the new EU countries and is the most progressive of the former Yugoslav States, the DFA said.
The two parties discussed points of mutual interest and shared best practices on governance and public administration, and explored possible areas of cooperation, including tourism promotion, educational exchanges, as well as the sharing of technical expertise in the preservation and restoration of historical buildings, landmarks, and artworks.
The signing was the high point of a meeting between the Ljubljana City government and the visiting delegation of Cebu provincial officials led by Garcia, the department said.
The signing was witnessed by Philippine Ambassador to Slovenia Linglingay Lacanlale, members of the Cebu provincial board, and the heads of Ljubljana's municipal agencies, and attached public and academic institutions.
The Cebu governor also extended her invitation to Ljubljana officials to visit Cebu during the province's week-long celebration of its 439th anniversary to kick off on August 6.
