MANILA, Philippines?For the first time ever, on a scale like never before, public and private sectors are uniting to create a public playing field for football through World Cup Pilipinas (WCP), a tournament pitting representatives of the world?s football superpowers against each other.
The competition is slated to begin on May 29, featuring games all day, ending with tourney finals on June 20. The month-long event will be held for the first time at the CCP?s Bulwagang Ipil-Ipil grounds.
Use of the fields will be free to the public on all days, during non-playing times. Free football clinics for beginners and enthusiasts will also be conducted throughout the day.
A celebration of unity amidst diversity, World Cup Pilipinas games may be enjoyed as entrance is free of charge and open to all. The free event is made possible by Castrol, Century Tuna, Milo 3-in-1, Nestea, Mizuno, Nestle Fruit Selection, and the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines.
WCP is organized by Sunken Garden United (SGU-FC), a Securities and Exchange Commission-registered athletic organization. SGU-FC is a football club that is truly of the people, uniting individuals from all walks. Members include young individuals seeking football scholarships, University of the Philippines alumni, Christians, Muslims, business executives, workers, men as well as women. Founded in 1997, the club was established in the name of UP?s Sunken Garden, the team?s home field, a natural convergence point for anyone wishing to play what is known as ?the beautiful game.?
