TEENAGE Filipino chess phenom GM Wesley So (2644) drew with 2007 Spice Cup co-champ Varuzhan Akobian (2636) of USA in the third round of the Spice Cup Chess Championship yesterday at the Texas Tech University in Texas, USA.
So and Akobian, both tallied 1.0 point and shared 5th to 6th places in the six-player field. The tournament uses the double-round robin format in the Group A division.
In the main attraction of the third round, Ukrainian GM Yuriy Kuzubov (2636) blasted So?s tormentor in the 2nd round Norwegian GM Jon Ludvig Hammer (2585) to share the lead with top seed Russian GM Dmitry Andreikin (2659) with 2.0 points each. Andreikin halved the point with Azerbaijan Grandmaster Rauf Mamedov (2626).
So will be handling the white pieces against Mamedov in the fourth round.
American IM Ben Finegold (2515) turned back Croatian IM Davorin Kuljasevic (2547) to seize the lead in Group B with 2.5 points.
