Some of Cebu’s top racers gear up for another rubber-burning weekend when the 2nd leg of the 2009 Philippine Autocross Championship Series roars off today at the back of the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC) in Mandaue City.

Multi-titled David G. Lim of DGL Motorsports leads the list of top drivers in this two-day event, which will have its practice run today. Race proper will be tomorrow.

This leg is part of a 5-leg series in Cebu. The first leg was held January at the Parkmall parking area with DGL emerging the overall winner.

Other notable drivers expected to compete in this race are Justin Neri, Randy Paray, Philip Lim and Warren Go.

At stake in this leg will be crucial points that will help drivers in their bid for the Cebu Driver of the Year award, which will be given at the end of the series late this year. Class champions will also be determined after the five legs.

The Cebu winner will then compete with the best from Davao, Cagayan De Oro and Manila for the prestigious Driver of the Year award.

A driver’s briefing was held last night at the Kartzone shortly after a press conference at the Baseline Restaurant attended by Peak Summit’s Neil Labrador, Racing Line’s Jong Uy and Castrol’s Mark Laus.

Uy explained that the race will have the same number of classes with the recent leg. Race cars will be scrutinized today to determine which class they will compete in.

The race is supported by Castrol Edge, Racing Line, Smart, Dewfoam, Peak Summit, RCTV, DGL, Outlast Federal and Danny Santiago’s Shago Racing, the founder of autocross in the Philippines.

Autocross started in Cebu in 2007 at the CICC tracks and fast gained popularity because of the excitement it brings to spectators and participants. It is considered a cross-breed between drag racing and slalom racing and can be considered circuit racing.
