THE Liberal Party in Cebu City is supporting the bid of Engr. Nigel Paul Villarete as general manager of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA).
Mayor Michael Rama said he was hopeful their support would convince members of the MCIAA board to appoint Villarete, the Cebi City planning and development officer, for the position.
?The most important thing is for him to get the appointment of general manager,? said Rama in a press conference yesterday.
Villarete posted in his facebook account yesterday that he applied for the position of airport general manager in 2001, 2004 and 2006.
He said that while he received reports that ?a certain Mr. Benigno Aquino III wrote a recommendation letter/letter of reference supporting me? he has yet to see these documents.
?I really hope they (airport board) will consider it (the recommendation) and hire me. I promise you I will not fly any plane there,? he said.
Villarete also posted in his facebook account an expression of gratitude for the President's trust and recommendation.
But Cebu Gov. Gwen Garcia, a member of the MCIAA board, said the airport board had the full authority to appoint the airport general manager.
Whoever will get their appointment would replace outgoing airport manager Danilo Francia who is retiring in November.
Villarete, however, clarified that he had not received a formal offer yet.
In his facebook post, Villarete said that ?just to set the record straight, there is no truth to the rumor that i have been appointed as general manager of the MCIAA?.
He admitted through that he applied for the position since 2001, ?but it seems the position eludes me?.
Another applicant to the position is MCIA information officer Ahmed Cuizon who is a CESO 4 holder.
Villarete said he wanted to be airport manager ?because i once dreamed of being a pilot when i was in elementary school.?
But he promised that if he gets the appointment, he would not be flying planes. Instead, he wants to focus on making MCIA a ?better? airport.
Rama said he is pushing for Villarete's appointment like other allies in the Liberal Party which include provincial chair Hilario Davide III and Cebu City Representatives Tomas Osmeña of south district and Rachel del Mar of north district.
?That (our recommendations) in a way added value to the President's recommendation,? said Rama.
Rama said he was confident that Villarete was qualified to be airport GM.
While he would not want to argue with Garcia on the MCIA board's appointing power, Rama said he could attest to Villarete's competence.
