THE Cebu City Public Library on Osmeña Bouleavrd has more reason to celebrate its 90th anniversary this April 17.

After resisting attempts to close the facility, a groundswell of public support resulted in last month's assurance from Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña that it will remain open.

Activities for the anniversary include a poster making contest open to non-professional artists.

The poster will carry the theme ?Public library: Rising above the challenges and limitations in times of global contingencies.?

An essay writing contest is also open to all students in Cebu City's elementary, high school and colleges.

The 600-word essay must must be an original, unpublished work. Entry forms are available at the library.

Rosario C. Chua, Officer in charge of the City Public Library, said they were happy with Osmeña's announcement since it means that the public, including students, tourists and senior citizens who use the library, will continue to have access.

joined efforts of reader advocacy groups who pushed to keep the city public library open. At the time, Acting Mayor Michael Rama said the library had to be closed and replaced with ?library hubs? in public schools in the city.

In marking its 11th anniversary in February, ran a series of articles about the threat of closure and the support of stakeholders and city residents to keep the library alive.

Rama eventually re-considered and Osmeña later reiterated that improvements will be done to enable the library to continue operating. Correspondent Jully Venus Cuizon
