Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña yesterday said he has no plans to close the Cebu Cebu Public Library despite the possibility being raised since late last year.
Osmeña, however, said he was open to ideas on how to significantly improve the facility, the use of which has diminished due to the availability of other information sources, such as the Internet.
He said the city government could not help improve the facility because, despite availability of funds, laws by the Commission on Audit prevents the purchase of books or publications without bidding.
He said he had planned to buy subscriptions to foreign magazines to help widen the scope of learning of Cebu City residents.
Material on fashion, housekeeping, house modelling, and technical matters could also help since these subjects are readily applicable to most people?s daily lives.
?These can have influence. Fashion magazines can help in the manufacturing of jewelries. Pilot magazines can help the pilots in learning new tricks,? Osmeña said.
Money was not a problem because funds are available, Osmeña said. Any proposals to improve the 70-year-old facility are welcome, he added.
The mayor said he does not have plans to transfer the library either since he sees no problem with the library?s location along Osmeña Boulevard.
Vice Mayor Michael Rama earlier said there was a need to transfer the library to a new location to improve the library?s services and provide ample parking space for visitors.
But Osmeña said there was no need to improve parking because not many people visit the library.
