Close to 2,000 applicants trooped to SM City Cebu on May 1 to join the job fair, which was held simultaneously in all SM Supermalls nationwide.
Acting Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, regional director Elias Cayanong of the Department of Labor and Employment in Central Visayas (Dole-7) and SM City Cebu vice president Marissa N. Fernan led the opening of the JOBapalooza 2009 at the Cebu Trade Hall.
Also present were Department of Manpower Development and Placement chief Fidel Magno, regional director Rosana Urdaneta of the Technical Education Skills and Development Authority in Central Visayas (Tesda-7) and representatives of the different local government units (LGUs). Over 50 companies posted job vacancies.
Sixty-six applicants were hired on the spot, while others were advised to wait for a call.
An orientation on business process outsourcing was also conducted by Tesda-7 in the different venues in SM City Cebu for career opportunities.
The activity of SM was in support to the government?s thrust for the private sector to actively participate in nation-building by providing employment to the people.
A separate program organized by Dole-7 and the Tripartite IndustrialPeace Council at the SM Entertainment Plaza gathered over athousand participants from the different LGUs.
The event started with a Holy Mass and ended with the turnover of a symbolic key to Mandaue City by the Cebu City government.
Mandaue City Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna accepted the symbolic key from Cebu City Councilor Edu Rama.
Mandaue City will host next year?s celebration of Labor Day.
