Anwar cites ‘Ninoy’ Aquino’s martyrdom

MANILA, Philippines—Former Malaysian deputy prime minister and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has joined the Filipino people in their commemoration of the 30th anniversary of former Sen. Benigno ‘‘Ninoy’’ Aquino Jr.’s assassination on August 21.

Below is the full text of Anwar’s emailed statement:

‘‘We join the people of the Philippines in commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Ninoy’s assassination in solemn remembrance of the loss of such a great hero.

‘‘Ninoy’s martyrdom must not be seen as a sacrifice only for the Philippines but for all nations who cherish justice, freedom and democracy.’’
