VP Robredo condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo condemned on Sunday Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying it is a “moral imperative” to stand against bullying and aggression.“I condemn the violence that has been inflicted upon the people of Ukraine, the violation of its sovereignty, and the threat that now hands above all the innocent lives in the region,” she said in a statement.
“It is a moral imperative to stand against bullying and unprovoked aggression, especially given the reports of civilians and residential areas deliberately targeted in the course of this invasion,” she added.
The presidential candidate said she “stands in admiration” of the Ukrainian people’s courage and resilience, and is proud of their efforts to defend freedom and a rights-based order, which she noted are ideals that Filipinos share.
Robredo also said she is grateful to diplomats and other public servants who are working to secure the safety of Filipinos in Ukraine.
The Philippines has voted in favor of a United Nations’ resolution expressing “explicit condemnation” of the invasion initiated by Russia.
Robredo said she firmly stands behind the Philippine government’s stance supporting the international community in condemning the invasion of Ukraine.
President Rodrigo Duterte said he still wanted the Philippines to stay neutral regarding the Russia-Ukraine crisis, but noted that the country may have to choose sides in the end.
