DFA condemns ‘senseless’ killing of Canadian in Abu hands

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has joined a chorus of condemnation of the killing of Canadian national John Ridsdel by members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

 

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the DFA said that Ridsdel’s death was  a “senseless act of violence.”

“The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. John Ridsdel and to the Government and people of Canada. We join you in grieving for the lives lost in this senseless act of violence,” the statement read.

The DFA said that it backs the operations of government security forces to bring the terrorists to justice.

“We support our brave men in uniform – some of whom have sacrificed life and limb – who remain relentless in rescuing the remaining hostages and bringing these nefarious elements to justice,” the statement said.

The DFA  reiterated its  opposition to terrorism “in all forms.”

“The DFA strongly condemns this cruel and inhuman act perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf group, and reiterates its strong resolve to oppose terrorism in all of its forms,” it added.

Ridsdel was one of  four tourists kidnapped by the ASG on Samal Island in September.

On Monday, his head was found in a street in Jolo town. Authorities said that two men on a motorcycle left Ridsdel’s head in the street then fled.

The bandits earlier demanded a P300-million ransom by April 25  for each of the victims, or the hostages will be killed.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President Benigno Aquino III and the PNP and AFP all condemned the beheading of the Canadian national. CDG
