Fil-Am SF book fest to open with film ‘Women of Malolos’

SAN FRANCISCO – Several book authors from the Philippines, Great Britain, Canada and the United States will speak at the Third Filipino American International Book Festival starting Friday, October 2 until Sunday, October 4 at the San Francisco Main Library.

The festival, which opens with the screening of Nic Tiongson’s “Women of Malolos” at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Koret Auditorium (free admission, doors open at 1:30), will showcase “the diversity of Filipino creativity, from literature to film and textiles.”

The authors will read from their most recent works in “Hot Off The Press” and in a variety of panels such as Creating Writing Communities–Kundiman, VONA; Completely Mixed Up: Mixed Heritage Asian North American Writing and Art; Beyond Lumpia, Pansit and Seven Manangs Wild; Flips Anthology; FWN’s Disrupt; Tayo Literary Magazine; Kearny Street Workshop; {m}aganda magazine. Authors will discuss process and direction in panels focusing on Filipino American literature, Filipino arts and literature, writing for young readers, challenges of translation, among others.

FEATURED STORIES

Panels will discuss politics and history related to the Filipino diaspora as well as traditional Philippine textiles.  (The Asian Art Museum next door to the Main Library has Piña: An Enduring Philippine Fabric, an educational display organized by PAWA’s The Hinabi Project in partnership with the Asian Art Museum.)

Throughout the festival on Saturday and Sunday, community organizations will have informational tables; specialty book vendors will have books for sale. To find out more about the festival, visit https://filbookfestival.org

The book festival is presented by Philippine American Writers and Artsts (PAWA), Filipino American Center of the San Francisco Public Library, San Francisco Public Library and the Consulate General of the Philippines in San Francisco.
