AFP: No restriction issued on military families’ social media posts

MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Wednesday denied issuing any guidance imposing supposed restrictions on the freedom of expression on social media for families of military personnel.

The clarification came days after the AFP dismissed claims of military resignations amid uproar on social media following the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines has not issued any guidance restricting the freedom of expression of civilians, including the families of military personnel, on social media,” the AFP said in a statement.

The military added that recent visits by Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. to various AFP units were “focused on reinforcing the importance of professionalism, discipline and mission focus.”

“The AFP upholds the right to freedom of expression for all citizens. We encourage responsible online engagement and critical evaluation of information to mitigate the spread of disinformation,” it added.
