PNP warns of `bogus' accounts of cops quitting after Duterte arrest

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday urged caution online after finding two“bogus” social media accounts claiming that police officers have“resigned” following the arrest of former President Duterte.

Posts circulating on social media have claimed to be from PNP officers resigning from the agency supposedly in response to the arrest of Duterte.

“Mag-ingat tayo. Baka may gumagamit ng sitwasyon to sow some confusion doon sa mga nangyayari na yun,” PNP Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said in a press briefing at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

“At least, may dalawang accounts na nakita ang ACG (Anti-Cybercrime) na bogus, na hindi naman mga pulis,” she added.

(There are at least two accounts that the ACG found to be bogus, as they aren’t really policemen.)

According to the PNP spokesperson, the ACG is working to determine whether social media accounts claiming to be resigning personnel are “legitimate.”

When asked to confirm if there have been resignations, Fajardo said: “Tinanong ko yung personnel. So far, wala pa naman (I asked the personnel. So far, there’ve been none.)”

Duterte was arrested by authorities on Tuesday and sent to The Hague in the Netherlands, following the issuance of an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant.

The former president faces a case before the international tribunal for crimes against humanity allegedly committed during his administration’s bloody war on drugs.
