Okada Foundation Inc. donates state-of-the-art medical machinery to Philippine Orthopedic Center

The Philippine Orthopedic Center (POC) recently received new high-tech medical equipment from the Okada Foundation Inc. (OFI). The donation is part of OFI’s PhP500 million commitment to the Department of Health (DOH). 

The foundation donated two state-of-the-art medical devices to the hospital, namely the Robotic Gait Trainer with Orthosis (Lokomat) and the Arm and Hand Exoskeleton Robotic Trainer (Armeo Spring).

Dr. Raul Cembrano, Chief of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, anticipated that both rehabilitation machines will help treat at least 16 patients per day on their recovery journey. He also pointed out that rehabilitation is more than just a physical endeavor, so help from different sectors is always welcome and appreciated. “At the Philippine Orthopedic Center, we don’t just focus on physical rehabilitation – we also work closely with local communities to help patients reintegrate into society,” Cembrano underscored.

The POC is a leading facility specializing in the treatment of orthopedic, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular conditions. It is also the country’s major referral center for spinal injuries.

“Assisting the health sector is one of the mission pillars of the Okada Foundation,” explained OFI President James Lorenzana. “We take great care in consulting with hospitals to understand their needs, and we strive to provide top-of-the-line equipment that will have a lasting impact.”

Both rehabilitation machines are cutting-edge medical devices, with the Armeo Spring being the first of its kind in the Philippines. This technology has been widely used and standardized for advanced medical care in other countries.

The Armeo Spring utilizes robotic assistance to support patients with upper limb impairments, such as those caused by stroke, spinal cord injuries, or brain injuries. The machine helps regain strength and coordination while making the rehabilitation process enjoyable and engaging for patients.

Similarly, the Lokomat supports patients with lower limb weakness or paralysis by providing a repetitive gait motion. This therapy experience is designed to be both effective and enjoyable, encouraging faster recovery.

“Much like these machines do with those recovering from mobility issues, the Okada Foundation hopes that its efforts will strengthen and help stabilize the health sector,” Lorenzana emphasized. “We will continue to work closely with government agencies, healthcare providers, and local communities to improve access to care, especially in areas that need it most,” he concluded.
