THE Aboitiz Foundation and Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes recently turned over a classroom building to a school in the mountain barangay of Tawason.
The P400,000 school building constructed by Aboitiz Foundation is a home to the 48 preparatory pupils of Don Calixto Yongco Sr. Elementary School.
The city government shouldered 30 percent of the amount as their counterpart.
“This is a big help to the pupils who used to hold classes anywhere especially in times of flooding,” said school principal Mary Jean Codinera.
Sonny Carpio, managing trustee of the foundation, said the Aboitiz group has poured in around P6 millioin for school building construction for the 13 public schools in barangays Labogon, Canduman and Pagsabungan, with six more projects intended to be completed this year.
Other projects include the water system, scholarship programs, computerization, primary health and child care programs, day care, cooperative and training programs and environmental projects.
During the turnover ceremony, Cortes said the city is very fortunate to be the beneficiary of various projects of Aboitiz family which include socialized housing for less fortunate members of society.
“I understand that they are doing this not for themselves but for the bright future of our children’s children,” he said.
On the other hand, Xavier Aboitiz, vice president of Aboitiz Equity Ventures for Human Resources, urged the education officials of recipient school to make good use of the new school building, which is aimed to improve the pupils’ performance.
