MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday said that maritime cooperation with Vietnam is an important point during his visit to Vietnam.
During his pre-departure speech at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City, Marcos said that he would meet with Vietnam President Vo Van Thuong, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, and the Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue.
“Maritime cooperation will be one of the cornerstones of the strategic partnership that we are going to forge, and we hope to strengthen this aspect during my visit to promote peace and stability in our region,” said Marcos.

“I will also discuss cooperation in defense and security, trade and investments, education, tourism, as well as regional and multilateral issues of concern,” added Marcos.
Marcos’ plans for defense corporations with Vietnam come in the midst of heightened tensions with China over the West Philippine Sea, which is part of the South China Sea within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

Vietnam is also claiming parts of the South China Sea, finding itself at odds with Beijing.
Marcos is expected to sign a defense pact between Vietnam and the Philippines.
