MANILA, Philippines — Two Filipinos have been arrested for allegedly abandoning the bodies of a dead couple in Tokyo, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo de Vega told INQUIRER.net.

In a text message, de Vega said the two Filipinos were arrested on separate days and circumstances.

“One Filipina last Friday and one Filipino yesterday. We are providing them the necessary assistance,” de Vega said when asked if there’s truth to circulating reports that two Filipinos were nabbed concerning the deaths of a Japanese couple at a house in Adachi Ward, Tokyo.

Based on a report from The Japan News/Asia News Network, the corpses supposedly abandoned were bodies of a married couple who were both in their 50s.

“We ask the public not to speculate or circulate unverified stories, as this may prejudice their chances in the criminal proceedings. For now, they have not actually been indicted for any offense,” de Vega stressed.

In a Bagong Pilipinas briefing on Tuesday, de Vega said the Philippine consulate in Japan would visit the arrested Filipinos through consular access.
