MANILA, Philippines — The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has condemned the killing of radio broadcaster Juan Jumalon.
Jumalon, also known as “DJ Johnny Walker,” was murdered on November 5 during a live broadcast in a studio inside his residence in Calamba, Misamis Occidental.
“I condemn the killing of Juan Jumalon,” Unesco Director-General Audrey Azoulay said in a statement on Thursday night.
“Journalists must be protected in the exercise of their activities, and I call on the national authorities to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice,” she added.

Unesco pointed out that they promote the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building, and coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
According to the United Nations, the UN Plan of Action is a “systematic UN-wide plan to work toward a free and safe environment for journalists and media workers, including social media producers of public interest journalism, [to] strengthen peace, democracy, and development worldwide.”
