French warship due for port call this Friday

The French destroyer that helped evacuate Filipinos from Sudan in April will make a port call in Manila from June 23 to June 29.

The arrival of the FS Lorraine is part of a long-duration regional security deployment, the French Embassy said in a statement on Thursday.

“France intends to contribute to regional security by projecting assets from those islands in the region or coming from Europe,” the embassy said.

The port call will coincide with the visit of French Armed Forces joint commander in Asia Pacific Rear Adm. Geoffroy d’Andigné.

The ship embarked 400 nationals of approximately 60 different nationalities, including Filipino citizens and more than 100 children, as part of a United Nations convoy coming out of Khartoum, the embassy said. —FRANCES MANGOSING
