MANILA, Philippines — Seventy-two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) rescued from Sudan are expected to arrive on Tuesday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.
According to DFA spokesperson Teresita Daza, 330 OFWs were repatriated last May 7, and 40 migrant workers returned to the Philippines on May 8.
With the arrival of 72 more OFWs, Daza said the total number of repatriates is now at 442.
Last May 5, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Susan Ople said several companies in the United States and Saudi Arabia expressed willingness to hire OFWs who were displaced due to the civil conflict of paramilitaries in Sudan.
In a separate statement, DMW said it asked repatriated migrant workers to fill out an inventory sheet to identify the assistance they need and their reintegration and redeployment options.
Based on reports, Ople also revealed that displaced Filipinos from Sudan would receive P100,000 cash assistance from the national government.
Last April 29, the DFA, DMW, and OWWA welcomed the first batch of 17 government-assisted Filipino evacuees from Sudan, who arrived in Manila flying out on April 28 from Athens, Greece; and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The said agencies are currently working to repatriate other OFWs in Sudan.
