Security Bank Foundation conducts Ready, Set, Read Program’s second webinar series
Security Bank Foundation, Inc. (SBFI), the Corporate Social Responsibility arm of Security Bank Corporation, implemented a follow-up run of its Ready, Set, Read! (RSR) Program webinar series that leveraged teaching via English Reading videos.
On top of training Grades 1, 3 and 5 teachers on how to effectively use videos in teaching fundamental English Reading competencies during blended learning delivery, this year’s webinar series added learning sessions on how to use Facebook messenger as a text-based classroom, how parents can become effective reading facilitators at home, and how to adjust teaching strategies based on the current learning level of different students. The webinar series that ran from February 18 to October 8 engaged Ateneo De Manila University and AHA! Learning Center as training partners.
Ready, Set, Read! is SBFI’s educational innovation project meant to address findings of the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA). PISA results showed that Filipino students were lagging in literacy vis-a-vis their international peers.
When the pandemic struck in 2020, RSR became more relevant with the country’s shift to distance learning. In its first run, RSR benefitted more than 9,000 teachers, and reached 26,000 participants on its second run. Meanwhile, 8.2 million individuals have been reached so far by the RSR videos.
Students attest to the value of the program. “When the quarantine started, reading wasn’t that fun. I couldn’t understand; that changed when the Ready, Set, Read videos were used in class. Reading is again fun and interesting,” shared Grade 3 pupil Rich Micahel Arroyo of Silay South Elementary School in Negros Occidental.
“Nakakahiya kapag lumalapit yung anak ko tapos hindi ko naman alam ang sagot. Minsan naman para matapos yung module nung bunso ko, ako na lang ang sasagot pero dapat nating tandaan na ang pagkatuto at pagbasa ng ating mga anak ay isang proseso na nagsimula sa ‘hindi ko kaya’ patungo sa ‘kayang-kaya ko’’’, adds Sabang Elementary School, Danao City Parent Jessamine Elalto.
The RSR is part of SBFI’s education advocacy that “seeks to provide every student with the chance to improve his or her life, whatever his or her economic background may be,” says SBFI’s Chairman, Rafael F. Simpao, Jr.
