OWWA allots P7 million for OFWs affected by Shanghai lockdown

MANILA, Philippines — The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has allotted P7 million for Filipinos affected by the lockdown in Shanghai, China.

OWWA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac said on Tuesday that the budget is for food assistance of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and those who contracted COVID-19.

“Ang (The) budget na nakalaan dito (allocated for this) is around P7 million and we have set the preliminary P2.5 million, and we will set the second batch of P2.5 [million] and then, until mabuo natin iyong (we complete the) P7 million,” Cacdac shared in a Laging Handa public briefing.

Each Filipino will receive a $200 food assistance. Those who will be infected with COVID-19 will get an additional $200.

Cacdac said that 500 to 600 Filipinos already reached out to ask for assistance.

“Mahigit kumulang, mga 500 to 600 OFWs na lumapit sa konsulada natin na mabibigyan ng ayuda dito sa halaga na ito,” he said.

For more than a month now, people in Shanghai, where there are 4,000 Filipinos, are in lockdown to address the COVID-19 surge there.
