HANOI, Vietnam—Police in Vietnam said gunmen leapt onto a boat in the disputed South China Sea and shot and wounded two Vietnamese fishermen.

Village police chief Tieu Viet Thanh said the victims’ relatives said that four unidentified gunmen jumped onto the Vietnamese fishing boat at night and opened fire before fleeing in their own boat. Police said they do not know the motive.

Thanh of central Quang Ngai province said Friday the boat captain and a crewman were taken by 12 other crew members to Malaysia for treatment after Sunday’s incident. He said their injuries are not serious.

Thanh said the boat was contracted to fish in Malaysian waters and was traveling to Vietnam. He said the boat was attacked in waters between Malaysia and the Philippines that both countries claim.
