The Philippines has been elected president of the 32nd International Maritime Organization (IMO) assembly, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs. This is the first time the country was picked to head the highest governing body of the United Nations’ specialized agency that ensures the safety and security of shipping and prevents marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. Antonio Manuel Lagdameo, Philippine Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the IMO, was nominated by the permanent representative of the United Kingdom, a motion seconded by the representative of South Africa. The election took place on Dec. 6 at the IMO headquarters in London. —TINA G. SANTOS
