GSMA recognizes Globe’s efforts on climate change
Globe’s rigorous initiatives to substantially reduce climate change-related impact and develop agile mitigation measures in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) were recognized by the GSMA in its Mobile Net Zero – State of the Industry on Climate Action 2021 report.
Globe is a member of the GSMA’s Climate Action Task Force, a collaborative group formed in 2019 to accelerate efforts towards the sector’s net zero goal. The annual report provides an update on the mobile industry’s progress towards its target of net zero carbon emissions no later than 2050.
“Located in one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, it understands the challenges of climate-related risks and recognises the need for sustainability-driven operations,” GSMA said of Globe.
The case study in the report cited Globe’s commitment to sustainability, going beyond regulatory compliance through its Integrated Management System certification by BSI Singapore. This includes ISO 14001, which enables Globe to implement environmental management systems across its entire operations.
Likewise, the telco’s mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 was strengthened by its support of the Race To Zero global campaign, spearheaded by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and COP26 Presidency, also backed by the GSMA. The company’s energy efficiency efforts and green network solutions have already resulted in seven of its offices and facilities running on 100% renewable energy by December of 2020.
The GSMA’s case study furthermore highlighted Globe’s adherence to overall environmental transparency by reporting its environmental impact through the Carbon Disclosure Project. Globe received a ‘B’ rating in 2020 for its commitment to continuously manage and fight climate change. This is aligned with the company’s support of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD), which serves as the foundation of Globe’s climate change strategy moving forward.
“We are happy to be included as a case study of merit in the report. As such, we continue to strategize and broaden our sustainability policies to ladder up our contributions to our ESG targets,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.
All these are part of Globe’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals such as UN SDG No. 13 on Climate Action which is about taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
