Over 86K OFWs have been repatriated due to COVID-19 pandemic

MANILA, Philippines — Over 86,000 Filipino migrant workers have come home due to the coronavirus disease outbreak across the globe.

Of the number, 46,957 are land-based, while 39,120 are sea-based, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Undersecretary Sarah Arriola said during a House panel hearing on Friday

These OFWs came from 62 countries and 132 cruise ships, she said.

In July, the government repatriated some 21,171 OFWs, and the Department of Foreign Affairs is eyeing to bring home at least  50,000 more by the end of the month.

A total of 8,974 overseas Filipinos have been infected with the novel coronavirus. Of the number, 5,321 have recovered, while 633 have died.

Arriola said the majority of the cases came from the Middle East and Africa.
