DFA: COVID-19 cases among Filipinos overseas climb to 5,566; death toll now at 426

MANILA, Philippines — The number of COVID-19 cases among overseas Filipinos climbed to 5,566 with 25 new confirmed cases, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported on Monday.

Data released by the DFA showed that out of the 5,566 COVID-19 cases, 2,643 Filipinos remain under treatment.

Meanwhile, 2,497 have recovered from the disease.

The DFA also reported 17 new deaths which brought the total number of COVID-related fatalities among overseas Filipinos to 426.

“Based on the latest figures, the Middle East remains to have the highest number of recorded Filipinos infected with COVID-19 at 3,446 as well as highest total recoveries and total patients undergoing treatment at almost 1,400 and almost 1,900, respectively,” the DFA said.

“Moreover, the Middle East has now also surpassed the Americas in terms of total number of fatalities at 169,” it added.

Globally, over 7.6 million individuals have so far been infected by the new coronavirus, which originated from Wuhan City in China’s Hubei province late last year. More than 427,000 have died from the disease across the world.
