Coronavirus infects 38 more Filipinos abroad; total number rises to 1,905

MANILA, Philippines — The total number of Filipinos abroad who have been infected with the coronavirus rose to 1,905 as 38 more contracted the respiratory disease, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) reported Wednesday.

Of the total number, 1,167 or more than 61 percent of them are recovering or undergoing treatment, while 523 have been discharged.

Meanwhile, the death toll now stands at 215.

“Based on the updated figures, the total number of our nationals abroad who have recovered from COVID-19 remains higher than the total number of deaths,” the DFA said.

Majority of the cases among Filipinos abroad came from Europe, with 608 cases, followed by the Americas — which has the highest death toll at 121 out of 488 cases — then by Middle East/ Africa (433), and the Asia Pacific region (376).

As of May 2, the DFA has repatriated over 24,000 overseas Filipino workers affected by the coronavirus crisis.

To date, over 3.6 million people worldwide have been infected by the virus that originated from Hubei, China, of whom, more than 257,00 have died although over 1.2 million were able to recover.
