How plastic waste was transformed into a Pacsafe anti-theft travel gear

02:41 PM October 11, 2019

How do you offer an innovative and ingenious product while doing your part to help save Planet Earth?

For Pacsafe, the world’s leading innovator in anti-theft travel gear, it’s about giving plastic waste a new lease of life. Nylon, one of the most common plastics in the world, is also a favourite material used in product making. Unfortunately, it is not biodegradable and hence, is harmful to the environment.

As a first step to its commitment to remove virgin plastic from all its new products by 2025, Pacsafe introduced the ECONYL® Collection, an innovation-focused collection that uses regenerated fabric made from fishing nets and other discarded nylon. The unique ECONYL® regeneration process creates durable, long-lasting yarn that performs to the same standard as brand new nylon. Unlike other recycled materials, the nylon can be rewoven infinitely without losing its high-performance qualities, creating a circular loop of reuse.

“Pacsafe was founded out of a passion for adventure and exploration, and with that comes a deep love of our planet and preserving its natural beauty,” said Magnus McGlashan, co-founder and managing director of Pacsafe. “Our partnership with ECONYL® means less plastic in our oceans and landfills, and fewer resources used to create new products. It’s all part of our wider commitment to reduce ocean plastic while helping people protect their gear and the planet at the same time.”

The new collection highlights the bestselling Pacsafe styles—such as the award-winning Venturesafe EXP45 and Metrosafe LS350—and recreates them using recycled waste. Also in the ECONYL® Collection are the Pacsafe® Venturesafe EXP45 ECONYL® anti-theft carry-on travel pack, Pacsafe® Vibe 25L ECONYL® anti-theft backpack, Pacsafe® Metrosafe LS350 ECONYL® anti-theft backpack, Pacsafe® Vibe 325 ECONYL® anti-theft sling pack, Pacsafe® Metrosafe LS100 ECONYL® anti-theft crossbody, Pacsafe Daysafe ECONYL® anti-Theft Tech crossbody, and Pacsafe® Metrosafe LS200 ECONYL® anti-theft crossbody.

During the ECONYL® Collection launch, Pacsafe also reinforced its support to Save Philippine Seas, an organization that aims to protect the country’s coastal and marine resources through information, communication, education campaigns and community-based projects; and World Wide Fund Philippines that champions conservation in areas where biodiversity matters the most.

The Pacsafe ECONYL® Collection is already available in all Pacsafe branches: Trinoma, Glorietta 5, The Block SM North Edsa, SM Mall of Asia, SM Bacolod, SM Lanang Premier, SM Seaside Cebu, Ayala Centrio, and Newport Mall. It is also available in all Urbanize stores, The SM Store, Rustan’s, Robinsons Department Store, Duty Free, Fashion Rack, The Travel Club, Bratpack, ROX, Outdoors by SM, and online through www.urbanize.com.ph.
