Filipino math wizards shine in Mathematics Without Borders tilt in Bulgaria

MANILA, Philippines -Eight Filipino math wizards bagged an array of awards, medals and trophies, including the prestigious Absolute Winner Cup, at the 2019 Mathematics Without Borders (MWB) in Nessebar, Bulgaria.

Christian Gendrano, a Grade 7 student of De La Salle Santiago – Zobel captured the Absolute Winner Cup for being the most successful contestant based on his elimination and final round scores.

Gendrano likewise bagged the Math Star of the Tournament, a gold medal for individual contest, a bronze medal for team contest and the MWB Gold Cup.

Other students who bagged honors and awards were Zion Skye Earl Carmelo Uy and Rohan Gerald Herrera (Ateneo de Manila Grade School), Harry Gerald Perez (De La Salle – Lipa Integrated School), Renzterton R. Sibal (Lourdes School of Mandaluyong), Mi Jung Pak and John Henry T. Marquez (Philippine Science High School) and Beatriz Lucia Rodriguez(Southville International School and Colleges).

FEATURED STORIES

The Filipinos competed against students from Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Iran, Malta, Republic of North Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam and host Bulgaria.

The team was led by the Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute (DOST- SEI) Deputy Director Albert Mariño, Asian MathSci League Inc. President and team leader Rechilda P. Villame and deputy team leader Dennis Dimaala.

Because of the Filipino whiz kids’ feat, Villame was awarded the Mayor of Nessebar’s Teacher Award, while Dimaala received the MWB Organization’s Teacher Award.
