MANILA, Philippines – A 24-year-old Filipino student drowned in a beach in Queensland, Australia, last Monday, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday.

The DFA said the unnamed victim, who drowned off Flinders Beach in North Stradbroke Island, was a student from Queensford College in Brisbane.

The Office of Migrant Workers Affairs is in touch with the family for the repatriation of the remains of the student.

The foreign affairs agency said this was the fifth drowning incident abroad involving Filipinos since January 2019.

Two Filipinos earlier drowned in separate incidents in New Zealand while a newly-wed couple drowned in the Maldives. /cbb
