Both defendants work as waiters in Dubai and were charged with attempted murder and consuming alcohol without a permit, the Khaleej Times reported on Nov. 29. The sentence by a Dubai court was made on Nov. 27.
Last May, one of the men cornered a male compatriot, while the other stabbed him with a kitchen knife in his shoulder and stomach. It was found that they were both drunk.
The man with the knife was sentenced to a year in jail and fined Dh 5,000 (P71,800). His companion was sentenced to three months in prison and will have to cough up Dh 2,000 in fine. Both will be deported after serving their sentences.
The night before the attack, the victim had three Filipino friends—two women and one man—visiting him at his place. As they were leaving the building at around 4 a.m., the two waiters verbally harassed one of the women and assaulted her boyfriend.
The friends returned to the victim’s place to tell him about the scuffle. The victim confronted the two men to defend his friend and was cornered by one of the attackers. It was then that the other man took a large kitchen knife from his room to stab the victim.
The defendants have 15 days to appeal the court ruling from the date of issuance. Niña V. Guno /ra
