Search on for ‘Galing Mason’

HOLCIM Philippines Inc. has launched the search for “Galing Mason” award to honor outstanding Filipino masons in the country.

As a cement manufacturer, the company seeks to recognize the importance of construction workers.

The company said masonry is a noble job, thus the need to be recognized.

Holcim Philippines Sustainable Development head Mike Cabalda said masons play a critical role since they help build structures for the country’s development.

“They don’t have to go abroad to look for a living when they can have the same opportunity in our country,” Cabalda said. This is the third time for Holcim to conduct the search.

In 2006, the first winner Sergio Barliso came from Cebu. In 2008, Rodante Andres from Capiz topped the search.

“We have seen great talents in Cebu where there is also a good market,” Cabalda said.

He added that when they came to Cebu City, they were amused by the tall buildings and other infrastructrues standing, which just showed the masons’ extraordinary skills.
The search started last March 22.

Holcim Philippines is accepting nominations until June 30.

Nomination forms are available at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) offices and  Holcim plant and sales offices. It can also be downloaded from the websites www.holcim.com/ph and www.tesda.gov.ph.

A nominee must have a Tesda certificate on masonry and a good moral certificate from at least two organizations.

The regional winner will receive P25,000, while the grand winner will bring home a cash prize of P150,000. /Correspondent Princess Kathleene Gabunales
