Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, President of Caritas Internationalis, recently visited migrants who sought refuge in Lebanon and called on the international community to “set aside greed and self-interest” to end the conflict for the sake of its people, a report said.
According to Vatican Radio, Tagle stayed in the said country for four days to oversee how Caritas provides for Syrian and Iraqi refugees in terms of their food, clothing, medical treatment, cash assistance and counseling.
He said he found it “upsetting” that people were forced to leave their homes due to conflict. Tagle added that these migrants live their daily lives in uncertainty, exile and poverty.
Tagle then urged political leaders to trace and settle the root cause of the conflict in Syria and Iraq.
The cardinal also met with Filipino workers who have been subjected to exploitations and abuses by their employers. They are assisted by Caritas Lebanon in terms of shelter, medical treatment, legal aid and counseling.
