FOR THE first time, a reigning Emperor of Japan will be visiting the Philippines, “possibly in early 2016.”
This was announced by Malacañang, which said the government had “started the necessary coordination with Japan” for a state visit by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko.
“This visit responds to President Aquino’s invitation,” according to Presidential Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma, adding that it will be the first time a reigning Japanese emperor will visit.
The royal couple’s visit also aims to “return the warm welcome” they extended to Mr. Aquino when he visited Tokyo earlier this year, Coloma said.
In June, the imperial family welcomed Mr. Aquino to historic Imperial Palace in the Japanese capital.
The Emperor and Empress led the royal welcome for the Philippine leader.
During the visit, Mr. Aquino received Japan’s highest honor, the Grand Cordon of the Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum.
In return, the President bestowed the Order of Lakandula Grand Collar on Emperor Akihito for his contributions in strengthening and pushing forward the diplomatic and economic relations between Japan and the Philippines.
Mr. Aquino also addressed Japan’s legislature, the National Diet, and held meetings with Abe and top businessmen. Jerry E. Esplanada
