Designer to highlight new ways of wearing Filipiniana in NY show
NEW YORK CITY – Fashion designer Renee Salud is staging a runway show to put a spotlight on new ways of wearing traditional Filipiniana.
Billed as “tataksaludnyc 2015,” Salud’s featured design collections demonstrate contemporary and intricate ways of fusing Philippine indigenous fabrics with embroidery. The fashion show is at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, at Double Tree by Hilton Hotel Newark (128 Frontage Rd., Newark, New Jersey).
The live events division of Fil-Am Who’s Who, a community lifestyle magazine catering to Filipino Americans in the New York Tri-State area, is mounting Salud’s latest runway show to benefit the “Feed the Children Program” of Catbalogan II Elementary School in Samar province, Philippines.
“I’ve been a staunch advocate for the Philippine fiber industry,” Salud says, “Its fabrics such as piña, abaca and the Magundanaons’ handwoven fabric, inaul, which have been ingrained in indigenous traditions dating back to the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines, have the strong potential to appeal to global markets.”

With these fabrics, he wants “to continue to push for the boundaries of design, weaving, and embroidery.”
“My show in New York and New Jersey will put the spotlight on these intricate masterpieces; it makes a fashion statement on the exotic, regional influences of indigenous tribes in the Philippines and their rich accessorizing.”
Salud believes that the traditional Filipiniana—usually mestiza gowns with beaded designs and butterfly sleeves for women and crisp Barong Tagalog for men—never gets old. His upcoming show will also introduce new ways to wear the traditional Filipiniana, which he describes as “culturally hip,” especially among the youth.
“I want young Filipino Americans to be proud of their own culture by not forgetting the Filipiniana style of clothing, which is simple yet functional,” Salud explains.
“Also made of materials from the Philippines, these innovative clothing ideas, co-created with modern-day Filipino fashion designers, can be worn in any formal occasion held anywhere in the world,” Salud says further. “It’s a new trend in fashion called fusion, where we combine both pop and classic designs.”
Raymundo Villanueva, Philippine-based fashion director, will direct the fashion show.
