Iloilo Rep. Jerry Treñas said he would support any action by the government to turn over Maria Kristina Sergio and her live-in partner, Julius Lacanilao, to Indonesia.
“Mary Jane was victimized by Sergio and Lacanilao because she is naive and she’s poor. Many more like her will fall victims to these drug smuggling rings if the people who use and manipulate people like Mary Jane are not punished,” Treñas said.
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) also said it was willing to provide legal assistance to Filipinos jailed abroad, but asked the government to first “institutionalize” an assistance program for Filipinos languishing in foreign jails.
Vicente Joyas, IBP president, said that the government needs to make a complete list of Filipinos charged in foreign courts and those held in foreign jails.
Speaking in Lucena City, Joyas said the IBP was willing to enter into an agreement with any government agency to enable the group to act on behalf of Filipinos needing legal assistance in other countries.
