THE Sleman District Court in Indonesia rejected the second appeal filed by the Philippine government in a bid to save the life of 30-year-old Mary Jane Veloso.
In a text message sent to reporters, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Charles Jose said Monday evening that the Philippine embassy in Indonesia has confirmed the court’s decision.
“Our Embassy has confirmed that the 2nd appeal was rejected,” Jose said.
He added: “According to the Sleman District Court, the second appeal was denied based on Supreme Court rule that only one appeal is allowed.”
He added that the embassy would be asking the lawyers if the discussion which transpired between President Benigno Aquino III and Indonesian President Joko Widodo Monday will provide another opportunity to consider Veloso’s case.
“Embassy is now asking the lawyers to determine whether President Benigno Aquino III’s discussions with President Widodo may open another window,” he added.
The Philippine government on Friday submitted the second appeal to the Indonesian court highlighting the argument that Veloso is a victim of human trafficking.
Veloso is set to be executed on April 28.
The 30-year-old mother of two was arrested in 2010 at Yogyakarta Airport after it was discovered that she was carrying 2.6 kilograms of heroin in her luggage.
