The lawyer for death row inmate Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, Ismail Muhammad, has said his client has not yet been placed in an isolation cell in Besi Prison on Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap, Central Java, as the government is still allowing her to meet with her family and representatives from the Philippines Embassy.
“If she is already in her isolation cell, she will not be able to receive visits anymore,” said Ismail as quoted by tempo.co on Saturday.
Mary Jane was moved from Wirogunan Penitentiary in Yogyakarta to the Nusakambangan prison island early on Friday. She arrived at Besi Prison at 6:45 a.m. local time.
Mary Jane’s transfer was conducted amid tight security with an escort from the Yogyakarta Police, which deployed a Barracuda armored vehicle to safeguard her transfer from Yogyakarta to Cilacap.
Ismail said a Catholic priest was in attendance straightaway after Mary Jane arrived at Besi Prison and she now spent her time mostly praying.
“She prays after waking up in the morning, at noon, before dusk and in the evening before she goes to bed,” said Ismail.
The lawyer said it was hoped that the Attorney General’s Office could delay Mary Jane’s execution as her legal team was in the process of resubmitting its second case review to the Supreme Court.
“Mary Jane is hoping for the best,” said Ismail.
