MANILA, Philippines–The government is monitoring the possible recruitment of Filipinos here by the extremist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

The Department of Foreign Affairs acknowledged government’s concern over possible recruitment activities by Isis and other foreign extremists groups, saying that Filipinos linking up with them could pose a threat to national security.

The DFA issued the statement two days after US Ambassador to the Philippines Philip Goldberg admitted US and Philippine authorities were keeping close tabs on possible recruitment activities by Isis in the country, especially in Mindanao.–Christine O. Avendano
