Aquino in Myanmar for 24th Asean summit

MANILA, Philippines – President Benigno Aquino III arrived in Myanmar on Saturday for the 2014 Asean Summit, Radyo Inquirer 990AM reported.

The report quoted Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte as saying the president was aboard a Philippine Airlines flight around 1 p.m.

The president is expected to discuss with the other Southeast Asian countries the issues of climate, change, human trafficking, as well as the code of conduct in international waters in light of its territorial spat with China, the report said.

The 24th Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) is held from May 10 to 11 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.

Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex Chua said the summit aimed to prepare the countries for its fully integrated regional economy in 2015.

But an economist from the Asian Development Bank said the Asean esd not likely to achieve integration in 2015 due to its difficulties in harmonizing “nontariff barriers.”

Aquino is expected to return to the country on Sunday evening.
